Rebuilt 327 L30 V8/2 Speed Powerglide/nice Exterior Paint/high Optioned Car
1966 Chevrolet Caprice Station Wagon
The popularity of the station wagon – particularly full-size station wagons – in the United States was blunted by increased fuel prices caused by the 1973 oil crisis. Then in 1983, the market for station wagons was further eroded by the Chrysler minivans, based on the K platform. Although the future of the station wagon is uncertain, its body style may return one day. This type of vehicle offers more cargo room than a crossover and does not compromise handling. As people want a vehicle that can haul numerous passengers and cargo, the wagon may see a resurgence under a special niche.
The future is now with this consignment of a 1966 Chevrolet Caprice. It has a rebuilt engine, and its original dash pad, dash paint, and door panels. Also noted is an extremely rare option of the bench seat headrests. A high optioned example with a well-documented owner history now ready for your hands to give this throwback design some air time through your neighborhood and in your driveway. Imagine the ohhhhhs and ahhhhhs you’ll get!
Exterior
During the 60’s station wagons were in their heyday with large and small designs, virtually every model had one, and all in different configurations customized for the user. Our version shown here is a “woody” version with wood appliqu side panels within a thin strip chromed border panel. This survivor has mostly original paint. Uppers and lowers are painted Sandalwood Tan and are rust free and looking shiny on that paint front. Nice trimmings for the windows, bumpers for the front and rear are in nice overall condition. On the back, wrap around taillights are on either side of the fold down tailgate with power rear glass that magically disappears into the gate on your command, as do all the power actuated windows on this car. Wire wheel covers are wrapped in thin whites and have faux knock off hubs in the centers. Overall paint has some wear off on the edges and a few scratches but is in very nice condition. Also included with this Wagon is some NOS woodgrain molding.
Interior
Lowering the rear glass with the touch of a button, then putting down the rear tailgate you can gaze upon miles of storage space with the seats down. Swinging any one of the 4 doors you can gaze upon nice Fawn, (cream), vinyl panels complete with the power toggles for all that glass. The wing windows remain on the crank and there is a joystick for the rear view outside passenger’s mirror. Inside more Fawn vinyl on the bolsters of the front headrest optioned bench. There are gold tuck and roll inserts, and this color moves to the carpeting as well which the benches and cargo area are covered in. The dash is all original. Some options are power brakes, R-12 A/C, still blowing cold, power windows, AM/FM radio, power steering, sport steering wheel, and a multiplex stereo. The headliner is long, clean, and fairly tight, and covers the entire interior of the car.
Drivetrain
The beneficiary of a total rebuild in 2014, the factory original 327ci V8 L30 engine is now bored .030 over, has a new cam and lifters, and a crank that was turned 10/10. There is a single 4-barrel carburetor feeding this rebuilt mill, and a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission is on the back. Way back pushing the rear wheels is a 12-bolt 3.31 conventional rear axle. This engine /trans combo pulls like a big block. Under the hood one could say condition: like new!
Undercarriage
Slight patina and some surface rust is noted but all unremarkable. New shocks and exhaust are on. The suspension is independent coil springs for the fort, and a 4 link with coil springs for the back. Power drum brings this long piece of Detroit iron to a screeching halt and power steering makes negotiating the suburban streets a breeze.
Drive-Ability
How cool is it to get behind the wheel of one of these. Funny it looks like a regular car up front, but when you go back anywhere or turn to yell at the kids, there is a whole new perspective of just how much car is aft. It ran great, is a wonderful cruiser, and nice smooth seemingly endless power is coming from that rebuilt engine. The R12 A/C is still even blowing cold!
The ubiquitous wagon all rebuilt and well preserved what was not rebuilt, and now we have a great example which looks nice, and runs well, and can take the entire family and their friends to soccer practice.
