1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396
2-Door Sport Coupe
– 396 V8 with Automatic
– Ash Gold with Black Vinyl Roof
– Medium Gold Interior
– Southern Car
The Chevelle SS is synonymous with the muscle car era thanks to its good looks, and 8 cylinder power plant found beneath the hood. This particular example is sporting the familiar coke-bottle body lines, body finished in a color unique to cars of the late ’60’s or early ’70’s, and rallye wheels, which all add up to a sweet classic muscle car.
Classic Chevelle lines are covered in Ash Gold paint. The car has been repainted once with the repaint having been done in a hue that has just a little bit more green than the factory color. The paint shows well throughout, apart from some debris in the paint in a few areas. However, the paint is glossy throughout, and evenly applied. A factory correct black vinyl top is a replacement item, but has been applied correctly and shows no sign of bubbles or lumps. Trim throughout the car shows well with even shine on the chrome trim pieces. Rallye wheels that have chrome center caps and beauty rings are wrapped in white letter BF Goodrich tires.
The interior is currently finished in a hue close to the factory original color of Medium Gold. It looks to us like there is a bit more of a green tint to the current interior surfaces compared to Medium Gold. The car would have rolled off the production line with a vinyl bench seat, and as you can see in the pictures, the car now has bucket seats and a console. The center console houses auxiliary gauges, and a B&M shifter. There is a small amount of overspray on the dashboard trim near the glovebox, which shows that the dashboard and glove box area has been repainted in the hue which is slightly more green than the factory Medium Gold. The interior is complete with speedometer, clock, lap and shoulder belts, and three spoke steering wheel. An aftermarket stereo and speakers have been added to the car.
Under the hood is a “ET” coded 396ci V8 mated to an automatic transmission. Since it is an “ET” coded engine, it is considered an L34 and would’ve left the factory with a power rating of 350 horsepower. The engine bay is tidy, and features a orange painted block, chrome valve covers, 4 bbl carburetor, chrome air cleaner, and a partial a/c system.
You can’t miss the good looks of this Chevelle, or the unique paint color. Ash Gold with a black vinyl top and Rallye wheels wrapped in white letter tires are hard to miss. This car has the good looks and the power to back them up thanks to the 396 V8 under the hood. A classic muscle car like this Chevelle is always a great addition to any collection.
