1968 Ford Fairlane 500

GM had surprised the auto industry with the “supercar” (later known as the muscle car) in much the same way Ford had shaken things up with the Mustang. Though Chrysler had introduced the Barracuda, which sold in distant numbers compared to the epochal Mustang, it took GM a couple of years to generate some worthwhile competition. Similarly, Pontiac’s well-received GTO took even the other GM divisions by storm, and their own big-car engines weren’t shoehorned into the intermediate bodies until 1965. As such, it wasn’t until Ford’s 1966 restyling of the midsize Fairlane lineup that it offered a GT model.

For consignment and your enjoyment and vintage stock car pleasure, we have a tribute car reminding us of Grand National’s silver fox, David Pearson’s most winning NASCAR car of 1968. In conjunction with Holman Moody, he won 16 races and ultimately the championship. A total nut and bolt restoration, fully documented and all in perfect working condition.

Exterior

In the Grand National days of NASCAR cars were really more stock than current race cars. This car is conforming to that on its exterior, and if all the stickers and advertising were taken off, it would be a Ford Fairlane you’d see on the street or your local grocery store. This 2-door hardtop is bathed in blue and sports a replica setup on the exterior with stickers, numbers and no fins or scoops or anything out of the ordinary. It has a gold painted top, and the windows are still in. A fastback rear deck with #17 cutout metal coverings for the taillights and a simple chromed bumper below with dual exhaust tips peeking out from the bottom. Gold steel wheels are wrapped in street rubber on all 4 corners. Boogity boogity boogity…

Interior

The doors still swing for easy access to this tribute, and it keeps all easy in and easy out. Black vinyl and some accenting white and a strip of chrome trim are seen on the doors’ inside. Moving to the seats a black vinyl like new front bench is looking like new and it’s fronted by the original dash with its 4 circular deep openings molded into the dash top and front housing the gauges. Below this dash is also a lineup of aftermarket gauges. In back the bench is still in and matching the front bench as well as nearly perfect in its condition . Black carpeting floods the floors and on the hump is a nice curved rod Hurst shifter which has a white ball topper and reaches towards the pilot. The headliner is nice and tight, and the B pillars coverings are looking great too.

Drivetrain

Under the hood is a very clean and fully rebuilt and bored 390ci V8 which is now a consigner stated, 427ci V8. With a blue painted block, lots of chromed bolt ons like the valve covers and air cleaner cover, and an MSD Blaster 2 coil and high voltage red spark plug wires, it is definite eye candy. It is topped with a single 4-barrel Holley carb, and has a 4-speed Toploader transmission on back with a Ford 9-inch 3.73 rear axle.

Undercarriage

All fully restored and it makes use of gold accenting for the rear axle and fuel tank. A bolt of gold accenting is seen for the transmission mounting crossmember. 3 inch H pipe dual exhaust is seen making its way past solid floor pans and rockers. Drum brakes are on all 4 corners.

Drive-Ability

Other than the tribute stickers and two tone paint job, this is a fully stock Ford Fairlane 500 with correct stickers and ran just great. A quick starter, good driver and nice acceleration. The interior is near pristine and this restoration worked just perfectly.

A nice tribute with which you can remove the stickers and you’ll have a stock Fairlane 500. Nut and Bolt restoration and it looks the part, as well as Pearson’s racer from 1968.
