1978 White Freightliner
Founded in 1942 on principles of innovation and customer satisfaction, Freightliner Trucks began with Leland James’s idea to build truck components with lightweight aluminum rather than traditional steel. James’s innovative concept was initially met with resistance and skepticism, but he was determined to make his idea a reality. He hired a team of engineers and built the first Freightliner truck.
For consignment, a very powerful, fully restored White Freightliner Powerliner. Sporting 600hp and a cab over design, with 13-speed overdrive leather interior, and all the chromed fixing, she’s a collector’s piece. A fully restored exterior in 2015 we’ve got ourselves a convoy…10-4 Driving school is over!
Exterior
With its COE design this truck presents just beautifully. All straight rust-free steel with a wonderful intermixing of shades of blues along with some gray metallic base coat. This chicken truck simplified and tasteful version sports lots of chrome trimmings including but not limited to side view mirrors, grab bars, dual stacks, air intake topper dual headlight bezels, wipers, tow pulls, the trailer link, gas tank straps, and last but not least stunning large big 10 bolt chromed wheels. All 10 of them! Clean glass, and all else painted silver it’s excellent and looks just like new. Try to keep the bugs off your glass and the rubber side down, we’re headed for the barnyard.
Interior
Brown leather for the entire interior with stitched in triangles that are tufted about sums it up for this vintage interior. Due to the cab over design, one needs to crawl over the engine to get to the bunk, but hey if the seat cover is worth it, the crawl is but a minor inconvenience. A full bed with a mattress is on the back, and even the headliner is tufted triangles stitched to the nines. All leather. Next to the sparkly light gold massive steering wheel is a full panel for all the controls you’ll ever need. Seats are comfortable, and the dash is easy to read. Door panels are very nice and also covered with the leather, and sport shiny chromed levers and cranks. All within ergonomic reach to keep you cool in the stool.
Drivetrain
Under the cab is a massive 3408 V8 Cat diesel giving it the moniker of Powerliner and putting out 600 horses. A 13-speed OD transmission is on back, and the massive rear axle can haul heavy loads. This engine was fully restored in 1998 and looks like new.
Undercarriage
All beautiful rust-free steel painted silver. Very sound frame and all attachments are just like new, even the air brakes.
Drive-Ability
She fired right up, and I had my first experience behind the big wheel of this COE tractor. It took a ladder for me to climb in, but once perched it was a feeling of power like none other. After a few laps around the test track though, I’ll stick to my day job. All functions seemed fine, and it drove very smoothly.
An excellent condition, rare collector example a White/Freightliner Powerliner. Beautiful recently painted exterior, fully overhauled engine, and a real eye catcher. COE design is not often seen due to length regulations being ever expanded, but still a fav design of classic truckers. Here’s your chance to get in on the high end, and take her for a spin, while charging per mile.
